A British research team seems to have revolutionized the treatment of amblyopia with a new therapy that claims to significantly reduce the time required to treat patients.
Researchers at the University of Nottingham have said that preliminary results showed a recovery of vision in 10 hours that normally would have required 120 hours of occlusion therapy.
The new treatment was developed in Visual Neuroscience Group in the School of Psychology, and patients have undergone difficult visual tasks under controlled conditions by the computer.
It is expected that the new treatment could be used to develop a game for children who could treat amblyopia to at least serve as a complement to occlusion therapy, which is healthier occlude the eye, which is often , uncomfortable for children, parents unpopular and has adverse effects on educational development.
A project of 60,000 pounds, the “study of the effects of perceptual learning in amblyopia” has been supported by the College of Optometrists.
In addition to checking the status of potential treatments, the study examines the level of neuronal plasticity in the adult brain.
The work is being carried out by Andrew Astle, a research student at the University.
“The results so far show a dramatic improvement in occlusion therapy, and proves how wrong that is the idea, long held, that adults can not be treated in such a condition,” says Mr. Astle. “However, the study is not complete and we are still looking for people to take part in tests.”
The work began in the spring of 2009 at the University examining amblyopia in children and the functional and structural organization of the visual cortex.
