Psychogenic Urinary Retention: Diagnosis and Treatment

psychogenic urinary retention: diagnosis and treatmentHow is it diagnosed psychogenic urinary retention?

This disorder is diagnosed primarily by history, that is, the story of your symptoms that the patient does.

How is psychogenic urinary retention?

It is believed that individuals with severe psychogenic urinary retention, which substantially limits their domestic and work activities have a non-generalized social phobia.

Treatment varies depending on the patient’s personal circumstances. No single treatment is effective in all cases, and most need to use a multidisciplinary approach.

The goal of treatment is to get the patient to urinate without difficulty and without fear when others are nearby.Drugs

Sometimes you need to take medication, especially if the patient has symptoms of depression or severe anxiety. Treatment can be performed by the physician, although in some cases of severe anxiety may be necessary to see a psychiatrist.

Psychological treatment

Several studies have shown that it can be useful to refer the patient to a psychologist to conduct behavior therapy. After treatment there has been a minor delay in initiating urination, increased urination and less anxiety. The initial improvement can be maintained up to six months. Bethanechol chloride, a drug that helps urine produced a muscle contraction of the bladder, can enhance the effects of behavioral therapy.

Probing

In severe cases, it may be necessary to refer the patient to a urologist and tell as a probe (inserting a urinary catheter) to empty the bladder.
