* Avoid smoking: If you already smoke, ask your doctor about proven methods to stop.
* Avoid secondhand smoke: select areas smoke-free restaurants and hotels. Also, ask guests to smoke outside, especially if children are at home.
* Reduce exposure to radon: Have your home checked to verify that no radon gas. A radon level above 4 picocuries/liter is dangerous. If you have a private well, have your water for radon.
* Reduce exposure to asbestos, because there is no safe level of asbestos exposure, any exposure is too much. If you have an older home, check for insulation, or any other material containing asbestos is exposed or is deteriorating. The asbestos in these areas can be removed professionally or safely sealed. If the asbestos is not removed properly, you may be exposed to more asbestos than it would if it had been left alone. Workers who are in contact with asbestos materials routinely should use approved measures to limit exposure and prevent lead dust home on their clothes left.
