Iron Deficiency Anemia: Diet and Bioavailability
Diet therapy

Dietary iron containing a variety of nuts and seeds, as well as red meat and egg yolk. They are low in iron milk products, potatoes and fresh fruit. The content in plants varies with growing conditions. Plant Iron is absorbed less readily than iron from animal sources. To prevent or correct the deficiency of this element, its bioavailability in food is more important than total iron in the diet.
Bioavailability of dietary iron
Several factors influence the bioavailability of dietary iron. The rate of absorption depends on the state of the deposition of the person, the more diminished the deposits are coughing absorb more iron. The absorption also depends on how exists in the diet. Heme iron (meat, fish and birds) is better absorbed than nonheme (grains, vegetables and fruits).
Heme iron is absorbed between 15-35% depending on the value of deposits in the body. The heme iron is absorbed between 3 and 8% depending on the number of factors that increase their absorption into the meat, fish and birds, and the presence of ascorbic acid which acts as a stimulant of non-heme iron absorption.
Treatment of Iron Deficiency Anemia
Treatment
The main treatment of iron deficiency anemia is oral administration of inorganic iron in ferrous form. Oral iron is available in a wide range of commercial preparations in the form of ferrous sulfate, lactate, fumarate, gluconate and gluramato.
The amount absorbed is not linearly related to the amount ingested, the more absorbable ferrous form to the ferric form, and the presence of ascorbic acid increases iron absorption in the reduced state preserve.
The occurrence of side effects with iron preparations limira manageable quantity. It is frequently found gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, constipation, epigastric bloating or diarrhea. The preparations that release iron slowly reduce the frequency of gastrointestinal side effects. We recommend the oral route in almost all occasions, but the administration can urilizarse parenreral shaped iron dextran.
Duration of treatment:
In the course of two or three days there was an increase of rericulocirosis. The hemoglobin levels begin to increase in 4 days. Treatment should continue for several months to replenish the body.
Dose:
The daily dose of iron for adults is between 50 and 200 mg and the dose for children is 6 mg/kg/day
Anemia >> Iron Deficiency

This group includes a number of chronic anemia characterized by small, pale eritocitos. The causal factor is the depletion of iron stores by a discrepancy between requirements and intake.
In adults, chronic blood loss is the most common cause of iron deficiency anemia, this may be physiological, for example, menstruation or multiple pregnancy losses or pathological as gastrointestinal ulcers, parasites or tumors.
The gastrointestinal tract disorders such as achlorhydria or chronic diarrhea, iron deficiency anemia can also cause an alteration in the mechanism of iron absorption. Also, during pregnancy there is some degree of hypochromic anemia caused by increased demand by the fetus accompanied by an increase in circulatory blood volume.
Children often have iron deficiency anemia during periods of rapid development by increased demands due to the constant growth of tissues
Iron deficiency anemia pure nutritional deficiency can be seen in children and adults who follow a milk-only diet, with rejection of other foods rich in iron.
Symptoms
Symptoms of iron deficiency anemia are similar to those of other types of anemias. There is weakness, fatigue, pallor, dyspnea, vague gastrointestinal symptoms and even malabsorption. The onset is usually insidious. The skin, mucous membranes and nails are pale by the decrease of circulating hemoglobin. If the anemia is of long duration may be atrophy of lingual papillae.
Usually looking iron deficiency anemia, although the evidence of the deposits is reduced prior to the anemia. The best index of the ferritin screening as the sole cause of their decline is iron deficiency
