Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted disease caused by bacteria. It is spread through sexual intercourse or sexual contact with an infected person. Both men and women can have it. Chlamydia often causes no symptoms. When they do have symptoms, you may receive a burning sensation when urinating or an abnormal discharge from the vagina or penis.
Chlamydia can cause a urinary tract infection in both men and women. In women, an infection of the reproductive system can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, which can lead to serious problems with infertility or pregnancy.
Children born to infected mothers may have eye infections and pneumonia caused by chlamydia. In men, chlamydia can infect the epididymis, the tube that carries sperm. This can cause pain, fever and, in rare cases, infertility.
Chlamydia can be cured with antibiotics. If you are sexually active, use condoms to lower their risk of becoming infected. Experts recommend that women 25 years or younger for chlamydia tests are conducted every year.
